You cannot upload your own selfie. You must go to an RDW-certified photographer or a certified photo booth.

Bring your current driver’s license.
The photographer will take your photo and capture your digital signature.
They send these securely to the RDW. You will pay the photographer for the photo service separately.
Within minutes, you’ll receive an email from the RDW confirming you are eligible to proceed with the online application.

Once you get the confirmation email:

Go to the legitdocs48hrs website and select Renew Driver’s License (Rijbewijs vernieuwen).
Log in using the DigiD app with the ID check.
Confirm your details and pay the fee (standard rate in 2026 is €53.65) via iDEAL.
You will receive a confirmation email once the application is submitted.

Step C: Collection

The online process is incredibly fast. Usually, your license is ready within 2 working days (compared to 5+ days for in-person applications).

You will receive an email when it’s ready.
You must pick it up in person at your local Town Hall.
Important: You must hand in your old, expired driver’s license to the clerk when you collect the new one.

If you are an expat looking to exchange a foreign license for a Dutch one, the online RDW path is generally not available.

The Process: You must make an appointment with your Gemeente.
The 30% Ruling: If you qualify for the 30% tax facility, you can exchange any valid driver’s license regardless of the country of origin.
The Wait: Exchanging a license takes longer (up to 6 weeks) because the RDW must verify the authenticity of the foreign document. You are technically not allowed to drive while your application is being processed and your foreign license is surrendered.
