1. Create Your ETS Account

The first step to obtaining a TOEFL certificate is registering through the official Educational Testing Service (ETS) website. This account acts as your personal dashboard for everything from scheduling to viewing your final scores.

  • Registration: Visit the official ETS TOEFL website and create a profile. You will need to provide your full legal name exactly as it appears on your passport or national ID.

  • Select Your Test Type: You can choose between the TOEFL iBT (taken at a test center) or the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. The Home Edition allows you to take the full exam from your own computer, provided you meet the technical and environmental requirements.

2. Scheduling and Online Payment

Once your account is active, you can browse available test dates.

  • Location: If you choose a test center, the system will show you the closest options based on your zip code.

  • Fees: Registration fees vary by country, typically ranging from $190 to $300 USD.

  • Payment: You can pay online using a credit/debit card, PayPal, or electronic checks. Upon completion, you will receive a confirmation email which serves as your ticket to the exam.

3. The Examination Process

To get the certificate, you must complete four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

  • At a Center: You will use a secure computer provided by the facility.

  • At Home: You will be monitored by a live human proctor via your webcam and the ETS Secure Test Browser.

The exam currently takes about 2 hours to complete, making it one of the most efficient English proficiency tests available.

4. Accessing Your Scores Online

One of the fastest ways to “get” your certificate is through the digital score report.

  • Timeline: Your official scores will be available in your ETS account approximately 4 to 8 days after your test date.

  • Email Notification: You will receive an automated email as soon as your scores are ready to view.

  • PDF Download: You can download and print a PDF copy of your examinee score report directly from your account. While this is an “unofficial” copy for your records, it contains the same information as the final certificate.

5. Official Certificate Delivery

While you can view scores online, “getting” the certificate often means having it sent to institutions.

  • Free Recipients: During registration, you can select up to four institutions to receive your official score reports for free.

  • Electronic Delivery: Most universities receive these scores via a secure online database provided by ETS, meaning your “certificate” moves instantly from the testing body to the admissions office.

  • Paper Copies: If you require a physical, hard-copy certificate, you can request one in your account settings. Note that mail delivery can take several weeks depending on your location.

Key Reminders

  • Validity: A TOEFL certificate is valid for two years. After this period, your scores are removed from the ETS system, and you must retake the exam if you still require certification.

  • Identification: Ensure your ID is not expired. If your ID doesn’t match your online profile, you will not be allowed to test, and you will lose your fee.
